The Eugster Couloir on the N Face of the Aiguille du Midi. First skied in June 1977 by Laurent Giacomini.
At the begining of the descent the Midi cable car cables are directly overhead.
Seb picks his way through the rocks.
On the first of the steeper sections.
The snow was really good most of the way down
Seb's goggles have already steamed up.
Seb's last turn on the part of the route shared with the Mallory. From this point we head down skiers left while the Mallory goes over the half moon just behind Seb.
The first few turns in the Eugster proper, and the snow is sweet as.
Where the couloir dissapears into shadow on my left is the first of the two big abseils.
Looking back up the first section of the couloir.
Seb at the bottom of the first big abseil. This was about 30m. There was no in-situ gear so we left a sling on a rock.
The next section of the couloir opened out a bit.
And we could crank a few nice turns in the fresh pow
It was still fairly steep here, but the snow was perfect.
Just before the couloir runs out here there is a little half moon windlip on the left which is where the next abseil is.
We used two ropes but you could just get away with one 45m rope on this ab. Another sling left to the mountain.
A few turns later and we reached another step that needed an abseil, this time one rope off an ice bollard. The drop here was vertical but held this funny frost on it.
Finally into the exit couloir, no more abseils needed.
A little tricky section to pass.
Then just cranking turns on awsome snow.
All the way to the rimay.
